Notable Fishing Waters
In the northeast region of Yellowstone, the Beartooth Mountains form a glacial wonderland where many of the tarns and large lakes teem with rainbow and brook trout. Fly-fishing is the preferred technique. Draining from volcanic plateau surrounding Yellowstone Lake, rivers radiate in all directions. To the east, two major drainage's of' the Shoshone River system hold good populations of rainbow, cutthroat, and brook trout.

Due to high water during spring run-off, these rivers become full of fish typically after mid-July. Mike snags a rainbow trout in mid June. Ask him about local conditions and also any fishing supply dealer in Cody will help. In Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone Lake is a great place for master fishing. Fish over 13 inches are protected, producing many trout averaging 16 inches. |
Wapiti Valley
Along the eastern boundary of this national park, Yellowstone, is the beginning of America's first and one of the last great wilderness areas. The Shoshone Region, runs along the 53-mile-long Wapiti Valley which bridges the gap between the park and Cody, Wyoming. Green Creek Lodge is located half between the East gate to Yellowstone, and Cody. |

President Theodore Roosevelt referred to the Wapiti Valley as "the most scenic fifty miles in the U.S." Few visitors would today disagree with his claim. Traveling over Sylvan Pass, at the East gate to Yellowstone in early to midsummer along U.S. Highway 14-16 20 means being treated to brilliant blue lupine, fiery-red Indian Paintbrush and other vividly colored wildflowers, all washed by rivulets cascading over rocky outcroppings along the winding mountain road. |

Wapiti Valley-bearing a Native American name for elk-signals the transition from the quiet pleasures of Yellowstone to the multifaceted adventures of Cody Country, where lodges and restaurants, river trips and fishing, trails and hiking all wait for summer recreation. And just beyond the highway are a myriad of game animals, many of which travelers can expect to see as they motor along. Bighorn sheep, elk, moose, bison, mule deer, and both grizzly and black bear all inhabit the valley.
